Thank you for the tip on acquiring the Drake Sword. I trashed it immediately by trying out the two-handed special attack, however I made major progress after I did a little grinding to be able wield it with one hand. It busted open this stage of the game, but just long enough to get me in over my head again. One bell rung!
It looks pretty heavy, so I haven't tried to wield it yet. I figure it is going to slow me down on my attacks, and my main damage dealing mechanism is getting a flurry of blows in after I get my opponent to miss. Think I should give it a try as a Wanderer?
ReplyDeleteGood question. I'm playing a Knight. Early on, I'd leveled up to strength 13 and dexterity 15 to use the Winged Spear, so grinding out two or three more points of strength wasn't an enormous commitment, but the payoff has been huge. Like, the ability to blow through areas I'd explored previously, take on boss monsters, and face new challenges head on is an enormous time saver. And ripping through these opponents just nets more souls that I can reinvest into my character.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, the Drake Sword is heavy (it slowed down my movement speed noticeably), and doesn't have a thrust attack, both of which are fair tradeoffs. And it's fragile when being wielded with two hands. But Dark Souls really opened up in an enjoyable way after I started using it.
"Ripping" might be a strong word. I still die at inopportune times, and holy cow some daunting challenges await at this next stage of the game, but at least it seems I can go toe-to-toe with a lot of them.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the Drake sword is the level two sword for certain classes. I am hoping that things like that exist for multiple classes and I just haven't found the one for Wanderers yet. I don't have a thrust attack with my Scimitar, and really just have to dodge and then slash. Against the maced black knight I was doing 24 points of damage with my scimitar . . . which doesn't feel like a lot.
ReplyDeleteI could boost my strength (11?) in order to handle the Drake Sword, but I feel like my points would be better invested in upping my defense and dexterity (in keeping with my character's premise of dodging and slashing). Eventually I'm hoping to find a better Scimitar (or some other named shorter sword) but I don't think I have what it takes as a character to handle head on fights with big monsters. I certainly don't have anything than can effectively crowd control.
