I have made it further into the castle whose name I don't remember right now. Unfortunately I felt like every direction I turned led to another black knight. The good news is that I eventually found a path to a blacksmith (the one near a bonfire). With the souls I accumulated I boosted my heater shield and my scimitar to +1. I then went in to fight some strange monster with no head that shoots lightning. I'm fairly confident that with enough arrows I can just hide and kill that monster with little trouble. I didn't have enough arrows this time, but I'll try again tonight.
The good news was that I was able to kill a black knight wielding a mace. It was harrowing, but only because I was out of Estus. He was pretty easy to dodge and poke with my spear. I still haven't tried to kill the one that is on top of the tower (near the dragon) but I might try to go after him soon.
Your (Dan's) suggestions about the Drake sword has made me curious. I think I am a little hesitant to move away from what I see as my character's main trait (dexterity to roll well and attack fast) but at the same time with such little guidance I might very well be leaving a bunch of money on the table. For example: what the heck and I doing with humanity? Have I missed out on some sort of leveling component and that is why this game is so frigging hard at times?
I got lucky against the mace knight in the Undead Parish and was able to take him out comparatively easily once I'd gotten him alone. Did you pick up the Fire Keeper Soul from inside the Parish? Don't mess up like I did and use it immediately--take it to the mute Fire Keeper imprisoned below the Firelink shrine and she'll upgrade your Estus Flask to provide more hit points per draught.
ReplyDeleteHumanity has a number of uses. You can unhollow yourself, which allows kindling Bonfires (spending another point of humanity) and summoning companions for boss battles. Ranks in Humanity also increases the percentage of enemy item drops and up some of your stats, although you may have to be unhollow and have humanity available to benefit from either of these--rarely have I been in that able-bodied condition. Humanity might be necessary for progressing through the game in other ways, or opening up certain line of dialogue or exploration; I've yet to suss out all its uses.
I really don't understand the hollow vs not-hollow distinction. The one thing I remember is that I don't want to be non-hollow because then someone can jump into my game. At this point I'm sure everyone still playing is a stud and probably a troll so I don't want anything to do with it.
ReplyDeleteYou always could play offline, like me. Have you joined the Way of White covenant? That's supposed to give some insurance against getting invaded, too.
ReplyDeleteI think I am playing offline? Every now and again there are shadowy characters running around the board. Are they existing online players or cached online players? I wish this game explained more.
ReplyDeleteWeird. Those should be active online players; I've never experienced that while unplugged.
